Aladdin – 2014

Synopsis

Aladdin is a Middle Eastern folk tale. It is one of the tales in ‘The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights)’, and one of the best known, although it was actually added to the collection in the 18th Century by Frenchman Antoine Galland.

In the United Kingdom, the story of Aladdin was dramatized in 1788 by John O’Keefe for the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. It has been a popular subject for pantomime for over 200 years.

The traditional Aladdin pantomime is the source of the well-known pantomime character Widow Twanky (Aladdin’s mother). The story follows as Widow Twanky tries to make ends meet in her laundry business with the help of Wishee Washee. Aladdin has dreams of making his fortune and marrying his love, the Princess. After being tricked by an ‘Uncle’ Abanazar Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and is granted 3 wishes by the Genie. The tale continues as Aladdin arrives back home and figures out how to make the rest of his dreams come true.
